China's Tianwen-1 Mars orbiter captured visible imagery of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS — including its tail and glowing coma — as it passed near Mars, making it only the third confirmed interstellar object ever observed transiting our solar system.

China's Tianwen-1 orbiter has done something no instrument was positioned to do for the previous two interstellar visitors: photograph one up close. As comet 3I/ATLAS raced past Mars, Tianwen-1 captured images resolving the object's coma — the glowing envelope of gas and dust — and its tail, structures that encode the chemistry of wherever this object was forged, potentially around a star dozens or hundreds of light-years away. That data is now in human hands.
This is only the third interstellar object ever confirmed passing through our solar system. The first, 'Oumuamua, was detected in 2017 and departed before any spacecraft could intercept it. The second, Borisov, arrived in 2019 and was observed telescopically but from Earth's distance. 3I/ATLAS is the first to be imaged by an active orbiting spacecraft already positioned in the outer solar system — a convergence of timing, orbital geometry, and operational hardware that may not repeat for decades.
What makes this scientifically electric is what the coma and tail reveal. When solar radiation excites cometary material, the resulting spectral signatures act as a chemical fingerprint. If 3I/ATLAS formed around another star, those signatures may contain molecular ratios or isotopic compositions that differ measurably from solar system norms — direct physical evidence of alien stellar chemistry, not inferred, but imaged. Scientists will be working those datasets for years.
Tianwen-1 was China's first independent Mars mission, arriving in orbit in 2021. The fact that it remains operational and was maneuverable enough to capture a transient interstellar visitor speaks to both mission longevity and the expanding capacity of humanity's eyes beyond Earth. We didn't send a probe to meet 3I/ATLAS — one was already there. Sometimes the universe cooperates.
