When Hurricane Irma hit South Florida, 16-year-old Elise Raurell noticed something that should have been obvious long before the storm arrived: the schools hadn't taught students how to prepare for one. Rather than wait for the system to fix itself, she built the fix herself. The result is Storm Smart — a modular hurricane preparedness curriculum designed to slot directly into existing classroom lessons, requiring no major schedule disruption from educators already stretched thin. Raurell developed Storm Smart as her Girl Scout Gold Award project, the organization's highest achievement honor, which requires sustained, community-scale impact rather than a one-time gesture. That framework matters here. This wasn't a science fair poster or a social media campaign. It was a structured educational product, built to be replicable and teachable by others — which is precisely why it reached hundreds of students, not just a classroom or two. What makes this signal-worthy isn't the feel-good framing. It's the architecture of the solution.
